Oskol Electrometallurgical Steel Works is the first and still the only enterprise in the country where technological principles of direct reduction (without a blast furnace) are applied on a commercial scale. It was a new technology of direct iron ore reduction and electric arc melting that allowed the largest in Europe production complex of this type to come over to a completely new level of metal quality — almost free from detrimental impurities and residual elements.
